Surface Treatment of Stainless Steel

Every mechanical or thermal process applied to stainless steel directly affects its corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is widely used across industries such as food processing, chemical and petrochemical plants, and oil and gas facilities due to its inherent resistance to corrosion. This corrosion resistance is derived from a naturally forming protective oxide film on the surface. However, this film is extremely thin and can be easily damaged during fabrication, welding, handling, or transportation. When the oxide layer is compromised, the stainless steel becomes vulnerable to corrosion.
Pickling and passivation restore the material’s corrosion resistance by:
• Removing surface contamination and heat-affected discoloration
• Eliminating chromium-depleted layers and embedded free iron
• Re-forming the protective oxide layer
These processes return the stainless steel’s corrosion resistance to its original base material condition, ensuring long-term durability, hygiene, and compliance with industry standards.
